Description
South Asia, India, ca. 10th to 11th century CE. A magnificent stone head of monumental scale depicting a Buddhist nobleman or prince boasting a tranquil visage with heavy lidded eyes and a prominent moustache. Pulled up into an ushnisha or topknot, his striated hair features a double lotus flower or dharmachakra at the center, with a double band of raised dots separating his hairline beneath his broad nose. His countenance is highly symmetric, serving to emphasize the ideas of unity and peace which are prominent throughout Buddhism. Size: 7.5" L x 10.4" W x 15.6" H (19 cm x 26.4 cm x 39.6 cm); 19.3" H (49 cm) on included custom stand.
