Description
An unopened 8'' tall Canada Dry Club Soda bottle with the "Vice President of the United States" seal and "Bottled For The Honorable Lyndon B. Johnson" on the face. These were bottled for Johnson as a gift in appreciation for his agreeing to be the keynote speaker at the Bottlers National Convention in Dallas in 1963. The 2400 glass bottles were made at Laurens Glass Works, Laurens, South Carolina, then bottled and capped at Canada Dry Bottling Company, San Antonio, Texas.
Purportedly, Johnson planned to use these for a barbecue at his ranch that was canceled due to President Kennedy's assassination. The new President Johnson ordered all the bottles scrapped. Even though most probably were destroyed, a few survived and are highly desired by bottle collectors today.
These items come directly from the Hirschy family. Lieutenant Hirschy was Supply and Logistics Officer for the Military Aides to the President and Officer-in-Charge of the Navy Mess in the White House during both the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. His duties also included taking care of the President’s needs on overseas trips, aboard the presidential yachts and at Camp David. Lt. Hirschy served in the White House from May 1, 1961 through May 31, 1965.
