Memorabilia belonging to the Presidential Helicopter during the Lyndon B. Johnson administration. Contents include a welcome aboard manual, an itemized load list, a Marine helicopter certificate, and a photograph of the helicopter dated 1964. Approx 11 x 8"
President Johnson famously campaigned from a helicopter while he was running for Senate in 1948. He cleverly utilized the then novel technology to draw crowds and move quickly from location to location. This campaigning technique allowed him to ultimately pull ahead in the Democratic primary and defeat his popular opponent Coke Stevenson. Johnson continued to enjoy helicopter travel during and after his presidency, even insisting on the addition of a heliport to his presidential library.
These items come directly from the Hirschy family. Lieutenant Hirschy was Supply and Logistics Officer for the Military Aides to the President and Officer-in-Charge of the Navy Mess in the White House during both the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. His duties also included taking care of the President’s needs on overseas trips, aboard the presidential yachts and at Camp David. Lt. Hirschy served in the White House from May 1, 1961 through May 31, 1965.
