Description
An original Russian elementary textbook, written by Nina Potapova, owned by Francis Gary Powers during his time in prison.
The hardcover 9 x 6" book, half in English and half in Russian, contains the hand scribbled pencil markings Powers made while studying. Inside the book is also a small news clipping in English regarding a missile attack on a canoe in Hiroshima that perhaps Powers was using as a bookmark.
Powers' Russian education became a great source of controversy back on US shores where he was labeled a defector and traitor. However years later the CIA published a report on Francis Gary Powers's conduct, saying he acted honorably throughout his service - and entirely per the instructions given to him.
Francis Gary Powers was a distinguished pilot for the CIA's U-2 program during the height of the Cold War. Powers was arrested after his spy plane was shot down while flying a high-risk reconnaissance mission over Soviet airspace.
