Chinese Buddha painting in gold ink on paper, laid to silk, hanging scroll. The method of painting is 'nag tang,' black scroll - gold outline on a black background. Hand painting with fine lines and detail showed Shakyamuni Buddha seated on a throne pedestal beneath the Buddhist canopy, garden by heavenly army on both sides, with attendants and disciples, and also with his mother and father kneeling reverently in the lower corners. These unique painting played in a very original way to a core dilemma of the Buddhist monastic life, its requirement that the attachments between an aspiring monk and his family be broken. Matted on creme-teal silk border, adorned with celadon ribbon on both sides.
