Description
A large carved wooden mask with kaolin clay accents and various tribal motifs including two sets of eyes. From The Bembe peoples of the DRC/ Congo, Africa. The emangungu mask was used in the initiation rites of young men among the Bembe. It was worn by an initiate, his identity concealed, when he left the initiation camp to ask for offerings of food in nearby villages during his year-long period of seclusion, part of his initiation into adulthood.The mask measures 29 x 12 inches. Ex Museum collection ( Full provenance upon request ) Ex collection Prof. Charles Bordogna, past curator of the SMA museum of African Art and author of several publications on African Art.
Condition
Overall fair, well weathered and worn. Old repair to stress fracture. In fair/fragile condition but stable.
