Northern Europe, Viking/Norse period, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A wearable silver bracelet made with knitted thin silver wire in a style that seems to have originated with the Vikings. The knitted chain is pressed into a thick wire at each terminal which is then wrapped around itself to complete the loop. Silver was the principal currency of the Viking world, which stretched from Russia to northern Canada at the height of their influence. In many places, the Vikings kept silver not as coins, but as jewelry, a wearable currency form that was not subject to the authority of a monarch or mint. Size: 3" W (7.6 cm); weighs 17 grams
