Description
Northern Europe, Viking / Norse culture, ca. 1000 CE. A bracelet for a small wrist, made of a single wide silver wire incised to appear twisted. The terminals are slightly flattened and pressed together, and each terminal is stamped regularly with one of the most ubiquitous metal decorations of the Viking period, a triangle with three small, raised pellets inside of it. These were made by applying a punch onto the object's surface shortly after it was cast. Wearable for a small wrist! Size: 2.9" W (7.4 cm); 31.2 grams
This piece could have been worn by either a man or a woman, as Vikings of both sexes have been found buried with jewelry like this. Vikings hoarded precious metals, especially silver, to a great degree; for example, in Viking Scotland alone, we know of thirty-one Viking age hoards containing silver - and those are just the ones we know about - while Viking Ireland has nearly double that! Silver jewelry of all types and sizes were a huge component of hoards, and functioned as a wearable form of currency. This example is emblematic of the type.
Provenance: private New York, USA collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
