Drawing by Gustave Cimiotti(American 20th century) of elderly woman with hat.9.5"x 7.5".(From AskArt)Called the "Grand Old Man of Romanticism," Gustave Cimiotti was one of the exhibitors at the Armory Show of 1913 with two entries, The Barrier" and "Hillside. He was a student of John Twachtmann and also studied at the Academy Julian in Paris. He was a close friend of John La Farge and Winslow Homer.This work has labels that it was exhibited at The Mead Art Museum at Amherst College, as well at The National Academy of Design in 1979.It retains a label that it was orignally sold at the Chapellier Galleries on Park avenue and is orignally from the Paul Magriel Collection.(From the NY Times)"Paul Magriel, an art collector, connoisseur and former tour guide at the Metropolitan Museum of Art..died..he was 84 years old.... Mr. Magriel was educated at Columbia University, and in his early years became involved with the dance world. He was librarian at the American School of Ballet and was later curator of the dance archives at the Museum of Modern Art.His collecting interests were wide ranging and included sports in art, American still life, numismatics, watercolors, drawings and sculpture. His collections were exhibited in more than 84 American museums and galleries.He was considered an authority on Italian Renaissance bronzes, and he had an impressive collection of watercolors and pastels, particularly those of 19th-century painters, including Sargent, Chase and John LaFarge".This drawing was removed from the James Kingsland Estate, NYC.There is a book for sale on the internet called "The Paul Magriel Collection:American Drawings 1800-1965"by Mary Anne Goley.
