With his father and brother, Patuone was one of the first Maori to have contact with the Europeans when James Cook's ship visited in 1769. The author was a close friend of Patuone in his later years and was therefore in a position to clarify much about Patuone's life to the extent that Patuone was himself prepared to allow. Ink note on the front endpaper reads: "This old chief used to shoot for kiwis on grandfather's land at the Bay of Islands."
