Author: [Noble, John W.]
Title: Letter from the Secretary of the Interior, in Response to Senate Resolution of September 22, 1890, Relative to the Supposed Spoilation of Lands Granted to the State of California in 1864
Place Published: Washington
Publisher:
Date Published: 1892
Description:
7 pp. Large folding tinted lithograph map, roads and park boundaries in red. (8vo) disbound.
The map was originally prepared by Wheeler's Geographical Surveys West of the 100th Meridian and shows the topography of the park in detailed hachured relief with much cultural detail. The purpose of the report was to investigate extensive timber cutting, fencing and homesteading activities that had been conducted in the valley under state management which had violated the Federal stipulation specified in the original grant "that the premises would be used for public use, resort and recreation" and that these uses would be "inalienable for all time". Concerning the subject of the report, it concludes that "It seems to be incontestably shown that under state control the Yosemite Valley has been managed with an eye single to profit and speculation and not in the line of preserving the scenic and botanic wonders of the place for the admiration and benefit of the people of the nation and the world for the present and future generations". A wonderful map of one of our nation's most beautiful scenic wonders which had attained nation park status only 2 years earlier.
