Description
Impressive Hand-Colored Lithograph Map of the Gulf of Mexico, titled "U.S. Coast Survey, A.D. Bache Superintendent, Sketch H, Showing the Progress of the Survey in Section No. 8, 1846-1854", the map inset with two ancillary charts of the Gulf positions of temperature and lines of sounding by Lieutenant Commanding B. F. Sands, USN, 1854, published New York, 1854, sheet 16" x 34-5/8". Glazed, matted and framed. The Coast Survey illustrates the Delta, the mouth of the Mississippi, and the major bays, sounds and lakes from just west of Vermillion Bay, Louisiana east to Mobile Bay, Alabama.
Condition
There is a 1/2" loss to the lower left corner, and 4-3/4" taped repair to the left margin, which is not visible when framed. Map exhibits some creasing at folds - two of which have been reinforced en verso with tape. There is a small fold to the lower right corner with some abrading to margin edge, and a small glue-like accretion below the "o" in Mexico. Light toning (mostly to edges) and small spots of foxing are scattered throughout. Condition is as to be expected with age and use. Map is in overall good condition, and retains excellent clarity of color.
