Item Details
Description
Southeast Asia, Burma, ca. 19th century CE. A huge wooden shrine / altar meant to hold a statue of the Buddha. The altar, which is painted a deep red, stands on four lion-paw like feet atop a three-tiered pedestal. At the top of the pedestal is a tall, three-sided chamber with an arched roof; on its back side, the wood rises into a tall triangular projection above the roof of the chamber. The interior of this chamber is open at the front, its sides covered with hundreds of small, raised, triangular, clear glass panels, each in groups of three to create repeated low pyramid forms. This glass glitters beautifully in the light. Around the exterior of the chamber - bordering its open side and roof, and then fully adorning the triangle rising from its back - are intricately carved openwork flames which have been painted gold and studded in places with applied glass "jewels" to form flower and vine motifs. Long, flame-like carvings of a similar nature are attached by thin, flat panels to either side of the back of the chamber. Size: 18.25" L x 31.1" W x 55" H (46.4 cm x 79 cm x 139.7 cm)

The three tiered pedestal is also richly decorated with applied glass "jewels" that give it an ornate, reflective appearance. The upper tier has diamond patterns, while the two tiers below it have patterns of repeated oval mirrors with multi-colored flowers set between each one. Hanging below the largest, third tier are three decorative wood panels with flourishes and relief vines, these also decorated with applied glass "jewels" in a variety of colors. A truly incredible piece of furniture, this altar would look beautiful with a Buddha or any other item inside, the light from its glass panels playing gently on whatever you choose to display.

Condition
Fine patina from age and handling on much of the surface. Delicate, with many of the projecting wood pieces reattached. Most pigment remaining, with some light staining/fading. Craquelure in some areas. Some separation of wood panels on sides of altar (rather than the base) and cracks to other parts of wood; all are stable but delicate. A great deal of the glass decoration remains, some of it delicate, especially on the interior. Overpainting of white low on the flame on the left side (facing).
