Item Details

Description

Western Europe, probably French or English, ca. 18th century CE. A beautiful hand-carved candle holder in the form of Ceres (Greek Demeter), the Roman goddess of agriculture and fertility, holding a torch adorned in lustrous gilding of up to 60% gold (equivalent to over 14 karats) and lovely pigments of tan, brown, black, beige, pink, and red. Draped in a lengthy, elaborate robe, the elegant deity stands with one foot forward on an integral plinth decorated with the relief of a cherub, as the end of her torch extends, gracefully swirling around her slender figure. Her gentle visage features round eyes, a naturalistic nose, and full, pink lips, all crowned by flowing coils of hazelnut-hued hair beneath a pointed diadem. The top of her torch is adorned with a brass cup, allowing a candle to be placed inside. Size: 8.25" L x 8.25" W x 26.125" H (21 cm x 21 cm x 66.4 cm)

Missing big toe of proper right foot and proper right index finger. Chip to back of robe. Proper right arm repaired from several pieces with break lines visible. Nicks, abrasions, and perforations throughout, commensurate with age. Remains of wax from candle drippings, mostly on proper right side. Otherwise, excellent with lovely remains of gilding and pigments.
