Item Details
Description
Stoneware with eggshell-beige colored craquelé glaze. China, Southern Song Dynasty (1126–1279)/Yuan Dynasty (1279- 1368)

Bulbous vase of ovoid form with elegantly articulated short neck and thickened yet exactly regular lip. The wall with an oily shimmering craquelé glaze, consisting of two overlapping nets ('gold thread and iron wire' craquelé), a fine underlying craquelé net of lighter grey color and a darker wide-meshed craquelé. Partly irregularly running glaze finish at the foot. Unglazed ring stand and slightly recessed base with potter's marks. On the base an inscribed collection's number 'M24606' and old collector's label 'E&J FRANKEL COLL.'

Shape: Ovoid shape with articulated neck and thickened lip
Dimensions: 31,5 cm (height), 6,5 cm (inner diameter of the mouth)
Condition: Overall good condition, minimal traces of age and use, small flaws in the glaze as a result of the production process
Provenance: Ex Frankel Collection (New York), ex Vermeer Collection (Canada)
Literature Comparison: Compare the present piece with a lobed bowl with a very similar 'gold thread and iron wire' glaze of subtle oily quality in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, former collection of Stephen Wootton Bushell (1844-1908), museum number '717-1883', published in Rose Kerr: Song dynasty ceramics. London 2004, plate 86. See also another 'Guan' lobed dish, dated into the Yuan Dynasty in the collection of the British Museum, London, museum number PDF.69, former Sir Percival David Collection and published in Stacey Pierson: Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art: >A Guide to the Collection, London 2002, p. 52, no. 31.
