Dimensions: 13.4 x 17.4 in.

Condition: Sharp strike with the issued centerfold barely visible, slight toning. Wide margins. Very nice hand coloring. Backed (attached) to heavy paper stock for framing - was in frame previously.

This superb map is one of the earliest Western rendering of Japan, based on the Ortelius/Teixeira model with the three principal Japanese Islands (Honshu, Kyushu, and Shikoku) depicted with errors but are in relatively correct proportions. Corea (Korea) is shown as an island, although the added notation is that it is uncertain if Korea was an island or a peninsula. The map is richly ornamented with two strapwork cartouches, one European (Dutch galleon) and one Japanese junk style ship, and a sea monster. Nicely hand colored.

Gerard Mercator (1512-1594) was a cartographer renowned for creating a world map based on a new projection which represented sailing courses of constant bearing as straight lines - an innovation that simplified navigation.
