Description
James Twitty (1911-1994) is a well known contemporary American artist who painted during the mid 1960s through the early 1990s. His paintings have been widely displayed both nationally and internationally in such prestigious galleries and museums as: The National Gallery of Art and the Corcoran Gallery in Washington DC (now in their permanent collections); the David Findley Gallery in New York; The Nixon White House; The Grosvenor Gallery in London; Galerie Bettina in Zurich; Queen Square Gallery in Leeds; as well as the private collections of master sculptor John Safer, his friend, and colleague Richard Diebenkorn; numerous US Embassies around the world; the movie:“The Exorcist, plus many others. Prior to beginning his career as a artist he served for thirty years in the USAF, retiring in 1958 as a full colonel and the Base Commander of Homestead Air Force Base in Florida. After retiring, he studied painting and drawing at the Art Students League of New York City and the University of Miami, Fl.; he was an Associate Professor of Painting at the Corcoran School of Art, Washington, D.C.; Studio Lecturer in Fine Arts at George Washington University, Washington, D.C.; Exchange Professor at Leeds College of Art, England; Guest Artist at the Miami Art Center and San Antonio Art Institute, Texas. He was a Life Member of the Arts Students League of New York City and is Listed in “Whos Who in American Art.
His paintings, are described as vintage, postmodern and abstract; however, to quote Hereward Lester Cooke, Ex-Curator of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC: “James Twitty is neither a realist nor a non-objectivist; rather, he has created his own idiom which belongs to our time, but is not directly linked to any of the current styles." James Twitty was the first artist to successfully combine geometric shapes with enigmatic landscape on a flat background.
As the public becomes aware that James Twittys seventy original paintings, all of which have been out of circulation since his death in 1994, are now being offered for sale, the value of these paintings will dramatically increase. “The Exorcist and “Landfall are the first two of these paintings to be offered for sale from the artists private collection.
