Description
John Hancock (1737-1793) Patriot. Hancock was elected to the Massachusetts legislature in 1769, and he chaired the Boston town committee formed after the Boston Massacre. He became president of the provincial congress. In 1775 he was forced to flee from British troops sent to arrest them for treason. Hancock was a member of the Continental Congress, serving as its president and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. As governor of Massachusetts, he presided over the state's ratification of the Constitution in 1788. 8 ½” x 3 ½” document signed, Boston, April 9, 1793. The document is a promissory note, in favor of Moses Gill (1734-1800). The document has been written by Gill and endorsed by him. Hancock’s signature is heavily cancelled in ink but is still discernable. Gill was a Massachusetts politician who briefly served as the state's Acting Governor.
