DUTCH SCHOOL (17th century) "Dutch Girl" Oil on canvas. 44 3/4 x 40 1/4 inches; Frame: 49 1/2 x 44 3/4 inches. This painting hung in a church in Holland for many years as a testament to the girls miraculous recovery. It was acquired by the family of Clark McKinley Whittemore, a descendant of the late President McKinley, in the late 1800's and has since been passed down through the family. [CONDITION: In overall good condition. The canvas has been relined and restored within roughly the last 30 years. No visible evidence of areas of paint loss or abrasions. Canvas is relined on a fabric not canvas. There is craquelure throughout, canvas has been re-varnished.† The upper 1/3 of the background has been repainted, with some touches in the figures upper right. The main figure is generally clean. Touches in face, the subjects right red arm (viewers left) is inpainted. The subjects left arm (viewers right) has inpainting above the lace and in the shadow of the arm, under the dress cuff. The varnish on her left hand uneven. Inpainting in the book she is holding and the ribbon on the fan. The area under the chair behind the subject is inpainted. †It looks like the painting was re-varnished slightly dirty.
