Description
PETERSBURG, VIRGINIA TRAVELER'S TRUNK, having a black leather covering wooden structure, interior lined with cloth and part of interior removable tray, corners and some edges protected with tacked metal. Two handwritten labels on both ends include the words "Virginia", additional printed label on one end reads "COLUMBIAN HOTEL / OPPOSITE / SHOKOE WAREHOUSE / RICHMOND, VA. / CRENSHAW, Proprietor". Card on interior reads "Originally owned by James Dunlop of Petersburg, Va. Son of John and Mary Ruffin. William Dunlop B 1806-D1870. This trunk was given to Mrs. W.F. Spotswood by her aunt Ann M. Maitland Devereaux. Isabella Lenox Maitland Dunlop was a sister of Mrs. Devereaux." Mid 19th century. 18 1/4" H, 36" L, 20" W.
Fair condition overall with lid broken from hinges, deterioration of interior cloth, loss of board to removable tray, losses to leather covering, loss of one riser on base and break to corner of one rise on base.

From the multi-generational family collection of the late Miss Mattie D. Spotswood (1885-1891) of "Stirling Castle", 320 High St., Petersburg, VA, a descendent of Gov. Alexander Spotswood.
Catalogue Note: William Graves Crenshaw purchased the Columbian Hotel in 1818 and owned it until his death it in 1859. Crenshaw was also a descendant of the Spotswood family. Martha Dunlop Spotswood was born November 11, 1885 in Petersburg, Virginia to William Francisco Spotswood (1827-1895) and Isabella Matoca Dunlop Spotswood (1848-1922). Marth "Mattie" Spotswood was a descendant of Governor Alexander Spotswood (1676-1740). She was active in several Virginia historical organizations including the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA), Colonial Williamsburg, and the Virginia Historical Society, and made contributions of manuscripts to the Virginia State Library. Miss Spotswood died in Petersburg 26 May 1981 and was buried in Blandford Cemetery.
