Description
**First Time At Auction**
Ancient Near East, northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A pair of large, heavy penannular bracelets made of cast bronze and a third that is fully round, with no opening and a simple wider ring around the body on one side. On the penannular examples, each terminal is in the form of a zoomorphic head, possibly a chimera or a dragon-like beast. The faces have long, broad snouts, large eyes on the sides of their heads, and long, feathered ears. Size of largest: 3" W x 0.5" H (7.6 cm x 1.3 cm)
Bracelets with zoomorphic terminals seem to have originated in western Central Asia, and they have been found as far afield as ancient Luristan. The cemetery at Surkh Dum in Iran, for example, contained many examples of these torq-like bracelets. They would have shown the wealth of the person with whom they were buried, and the animal figures probably had some symbolism that is now lost to time.
Provenance: private R. D. collection, Long Beach, California, USA collection, acquired over twenty five years from various major galleries
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
