Africa, Nigeria, Katsina style, ca. 200 BCE to 100 CE. This is a terracotta head with long features and no chin; the eyes are holes, as are the nose and mouth; the ears have been pierced and the figure has a raised mark on his chin as well as a ring around his head that looks like a snug cap. This culture spanned centuries and a wide geographic region, so there are many varieties of artwork we see from it. Katsina, located on the trade routes between the ancient city of Kano and the Sahara, was also closely linked to Sokoto. Figures like this one from Katsina were most likely originally attached to globular jars and may have been funerary markers. Size: 4.25" W x 8" H (10.8 cm x 20.3 cm).
Provenance: Ex-Dr. Peter Arnovick Collection, Los Altos CA
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
