Alice Brown Chittenden (American, 1856-1944), oil on canvas depicting a floral still life of a vase bursting with red poppies on a table with teacups and a smaller bouquet, artist signed 'Alice B. Chittenden' at lower right, with accompanying floral still life painted en verso to canvas, 28.5"h x 27.25"w, overall dimensions including frame 33"h x 31"w x 3.25"d. Known as the 'Grande Dame' of women artists in San Francisco, Alice Brown Chittenden was born in Brockport, New York and later studied at the School of Design after her parents re-settled in California. She is know for her California botanical paintings, which received medals at a number of expositions, and for her landscapes and portraits.
