Description
In this icon St. Nicholas holds a church building in one hand and a sword in the other hand. This image is said to have originated in Mozhash, a city Nicholas is believed to have protected from the Tatars. In the upper left and upper right corner, Christ and the Mother of God are represented surrounded by clouds. The emphasis in his Icon type , is on Saint Nicholas as the champion of the Orthodox faith, and protector of the Church and people. This scene refers to the battle Nicholas fought against the heretic Arians during the Council of Nicaea in 325. After he slapped the face of their leader Arius, Nicholas had his episcopate revoked and was thrown into prison. At night, Christ and the Mother of God appeared to him to personally return his Book of Gospels and bishop's stole to him. Rare subject painted in detail and with the use of bright colours. Condition: authentic icon, painting film in excellent condition. Provenance: private collection Nertherlands.
