Description
**Originally Listed At $2500**

Latin America, Mexico, ca. 18th century CE. A stunning painting depicting the Virgin and Child with Saint Anne before an open window through which a lovely landscape is visible, this composition modeled after an Italian Renaissance artist, most likely a Venetian, possibly of the Bassano family. The technique follows practices favored in 18th c. Mexico involving pigments ground in terracotta then layered with oils and varnish. Mounted in an original gilded wood frame. Size: 37.5" L x 29" W (95.2 cm x 73.7 cm); framed 46" L x 36.5" W (116.8 cm x 92.7 cm)

A lovely composition portrayed in a traditional Renaissance triangular arrangement, the figures' natural gestures interlocking with one another, this charming interplay symbolizing the notion of lineage of three generations, Saint Anne being the mother of Mary, Mary mother to Jesus. This painting presents many of the hallmarks of Venetian painting - rich colors as well as an emphasis on surface textures and the effects of light. Although Venetian artists were versed in linear perspective, depth was more often suggested via atmospheric perspective, playing with light and color contrasts. The composition appears to be influenced by the Bassano family, possibly Jacopo Bassano (1510-1592), who was born and died in Bassano del Grappa near Venice, hence his adopted name, or one of his sons, Leandro Bassano or Francesco Bassano the Younger. Notice the finely rendered landscape in the background. Bassano is regarded as a pioneer of landscape painting; however, his family workshop primarily focused on religious subjects. He also used a brilliant color palette, attesting to his great appreciation for Titian. Furthermore, this composition was probably modeled on Bassano's early period, before he took on a new interest in Mannerism.
