Description
Austral Islands ceremonial paddle, 19th century, elaborately incised or chip-carved all over, these paddles were probably made to sell to 19th century sailors whaling in the South Seas and show the carver's art, the handle is rectangular and has eight stylized or abstract human figures around, the shaft is square, the paddle part is wider than the other (longer) example and it has one hole, a few gauges, and an eroded tip, 47"l. Provenance: from the collection of Maria Manetti Shrem and Jan Shrem, retains old Christie's label.
