Cecil Broadhurst, American, 1903-1981, Arizona, Canada Desert landscape “Chief Curly Bear - A Blackfoot Decorated by Woodrow Wilson” Signed lower right, title and date on verso The sitter for this portrait was Chief Curly Bear of the Blackfeet tribe, who are among the oldest residents to inhabit the northwestern plains. Spanning twenty-eight million acres at its maximum point, their territory had more buffalo per square mile than anywhere else. The Chief looks solemnly forward, locking eye contact before a rusty colored background.
