Description
Knute (Sven August) Heldner, Swedish-American, 1877-1952, Minnesota, Louisiana “Birch Trees at Lake Superior” Signed lower right This landscape painting depicts a small gathering of birch trees at Lake Superior, as the artist witnessed this particular view in Duluth, Minnesota. The viewer is set on a hill looking down, then over a small expanse of flat rock that leads straight into the lake. The water appears to extend beyond the reach of the human eye as with viewing an ocean. Softened clouds are scattered above waves that crash along the rock. Heldner immigrated to the U.S. around 1902, moving soon thereafter to Minnesota. He spent his winters in New Orleans and his summers in Duluth, Minnesota, retaining an active role in both art communities. He exhibited in both cities (winning a gold medal at the 1915 MN state fair) as well as at the Swedish-American Art Exhibition in Chicago, and was honored with a solo exhibition at the Salon d’Automne in Paris, a Stockholm gallery, and at the Arts and Crafts Club of New Orleans. Heldner was a member of the WPA Federal Art Project. His paintings are in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institute, the Luxembourg Museum in Paris, and the White House.Dimensions: 25 x 29 in., 29.75 x 33.25 in. frameArtist or Maker: Knute (Sven August) HeldnerMedium: Oil on canvasDate: 1930
