Pre-Columbian, Mayan territories, Guatemala, probably Peten, ca. 550 to 900 CE. Large, vibrant and finely painted Mayan tripod platter decorated in shades of red, orange, black and gray. Central image of a standing lord or priest with right hand extended in gesture of offering, left hand holds what appears to be a ceremonial object. He wears long, elaborate headdress, face and body painted deep red. In the band surrounding the central image are four oversized glyphs and deep red panels in a watery motif which carries over to the reverse. A very striking example in fabulous condition! Size: 14.5" W x 2.5" H (36.8 cm x 6.4 cm)
