Description
Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Guanacaste / Nicoya region, ca. 200 to 600 CE. Expertly carved and string-cut from a stunning piece of translucent, blue-green jade, a face mask pendant presenting an expressive visage looking out with a wide-eyed countenance and a toothy grimace, wearing a headdress comprised of two long-beaked birds. In addition to the openwork beneath the beaks, the gentleman's ears are pierced for attaching ornaments. In the Pre-Columbian World, birds were regarded as animals of the celestial realm that served as messengers between humankind and their deities. Perforated at the top center for suspension. A mesmerizing "bird-man" visage! Size: 1.875" L x 1.625" W (4.8 cm x 4.1 cm)
