Description

Central Asia, India, Northern Kerala / Southern Coastal Karnataka, Tulu Nada /Bhuta cult, ca. 1500 to 1800 CE. A cast bronze figure of a bull, standing on four thin legs and with a large head with prominent horns, a long snout, and large eyes. The figure stands easily on its own. The bull, known as Maisandaaya or Nandigona, is a totemic figure in this cult, which seems to pre-date the conversion to Hinduism in the region approximately 2500 years ago. As a result, the figure here combines ancient beliefs about bulls as they relate to agriculture and fertility with Hindu beliefs about sacred bulls. Size: 2.7" L x 1.05" W x 2.6" H (6.9 cm x 2.7 cm x 6.6 cm).
