Japanese representatives of the Ryukyu Islands command meet at Gen. Joseph Stillwells headquarters on Okinawa to discuss terms of the surrender two days later. Americans and Japanese seated together are, left to right, Keri Takemura, Japanese civilian interpreter; Maj. Gen. Toshiro Taga, representing the Sakashima Islands; Col. Louis P. Ely, US Tenth Army Intelligence Officer; Maj. Gen. Frank Merrill, US Tenth Army Chief of Staff, representing Gen. Stillwell; Lt. John M. Flaglor, American Language Officer, Lt. Col.
