Northern Europe, Viking/Norse period, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A collection of gorgeous buttons, each one unique. Nine are solid cast bronze, one in bell form, one in a flattened form, and the others all with lightly stippled surfaces. Four are silver, also with stippled surfaces; another is lead, again with a stippled surface. Three are twisted bronze wire, one with a white glass bead, one with a black glass bead, and one with an amazing deep red amber bead. One is bronze with a round, clear glass inlay. Three are bronze with cloisonne enamel. All but the twisted wire buttons have cast loops for suspension. Finely decorated clothing was a sign of wealth in the Viking period, and buttons like these were used to fasten them tightly against the cold, wet weather which was common in the North Atlantic and Scandinavia.
