Item Details
Description
Central/Northern Europe, Celtic Iron Age, ca. 2nd century BCE to 1st century CE. A hand-forged iron bit formed from loop-ended cheekpieces with a chain attached. Contemporary large iron nails hold the piece together. The movement of all the iron parts emphasizes the excellent condition of this piece. Iron horse bits have been found throughout the Celtic world, with recorded finds throughout the United Kingdom, Ireland, and northern continental Europe. Most have survived only partially or in such a rusted state that it is difficult to see their original form. Comes with custom stand. Size: 5.5" W x 7.6" H (14 cm x 19.3 cm); height on stand: 9.5" (24.1 cm)
Horse bits in the Celtic period were not just tools, made to sit between the animal's teeth and guide it using reins from its back, from a cart, or from a chariot, but also treasured objects. Owning a horse was expensive, and only available to the socially elite, and horse bits like this one were placed into wealthy graves. For example, a high-status cremation burial from Strettweg, Austria, included bronze vessels, bronze figures, and multiple iron horse bits.
Provenance: private York, England collection acquired before 1990
