**First Time At Auction**
East Asia, Japan, Edo Period, ca. 19th century CE. This netsuke, made of dark-colored boxwood, depicts a seated Baku, a figure with an elephant's trunk, the eyes of a sai (another mythical beast akin to the rhinoceros), an oxen tail, and the feet of a tiger. The tail and mane have a wave-like and feathery appearance, suggesting that this baku is of a greater mythological status than other similar baku. A white-colored opalescent area on the underside contains the signature of the craftsman. Baku are supernatural Japanese beings that devour dreams and nightmares alike. According to legend, they were created by the spare pieces that were left over when the gods finished created all other animals. They have a long history in Japanese folklore and art. Size: 1.3" L x 1" W x 2.7" H (3.3 cm x 2.5 cm x 6.9 cm).
