Description
**First Time At Auction**
Ancient Greece, Archaic to Attic, ca. 7th to 5th century BCE. "In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight" - or, given the Greek origin of this piece, perhaps those lyrics should include a phrase about serene islands and coastal beaches! A large and dramatically modeled lion's paw with nice remains of red and black pigments, probably used as an architectural ornament. Lions are often the stars of ancient Greek stories, such as the Nemean lion, and it is probable that the sculptor of this piece saw lions in real life: Aristotle and Herodotus tell us that lions lived in the Balkans and Greece until around the 1st century BCE! Size: 5.125" W x 3.125" H (13 cm x 7.9 cm)
Provenance: private New Jersey USA collection, acquired over twenty years ago
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.
