Description
Pedro Duran (Spanish, founded 1886), last quarter 20th century. A chess set, having a marquetry inlaid walnut, mahogany, and satinwood case on paw feet, the lid mounted with four knight's helmets and lifting and rotating to reveal the game board, with 32 bonded porcelain-filled sterling silver chess pieces in the form of a medieval court, half of the pieces additionally gilt, resting in a red velveteen fitted interior. Includes original box. Each figure and escutcheon marked with maker's hallmark and as 925 quality. Approximate height (of case, closed) 4.25", width 18.5", depth 18.5".
Condition
Scratches to silver shield on game top (see image #3). Some cracks to coated veneer surface (see image #8). Some tarnishing to figures (see image #9). Applied felt bases to figures peeling off. Minor soiling and wear to felt lining. Repair to veneer chip. A complete set.
