Tronson accompanied Sir Frederick Henry Stirling, commander of a squadron of ships sent to Japan in 1855. This was a time of great upheaval in Japan as the country had only recently been opened to the West. Tronson's observations of Japan are keen and insightful. Vice Admiral Frederick Henry Stirling was a Royal Navy officer who went on to be Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Station. Taylor, p. 45. Cordier, Sinica, III, col. 2124.

Perforated library stamp to title page, blind library stamp on plate at front with some tape repairs on verso, some closed tears and tape repairs to maps, toning; very good.
