Card Signed By Alice Sanger, 3 Weeks After Benj. Harrison Takes Office (1889)

Alice B. Sanger was the first female staffer at the White House, having been appointed officially by Benjamin Harrison on Jan. 2, 1890. This receipt card dated March 27, 1889, is signed by A. B. Sanger for Mrs. Benjamin Harrison. A newspaper clip accompanying the card relates that Ms. Sanger “…is one of the family…writes all the President’s personal letters.” In 1925, Alice B. Sanger was sworn in as one of two assistant chief clerks of the Post Office Department, the first woman to hold that position. She is also remembered for having designed the first official flag used in the Post Office Department. Some minor scuffing. Very good minus. 3 x 5.125
