Item Details
Description
Greece, Thrace, ca. 146 to 100 BCE. (16.8 g) Obverse: Head of Dionysus with ivy wreath. Reverse: inscription, nude standing god Herakles with club and lion's skin. Size: 1.25" W (3.2 cm)

Tales of Herakles (Hercules) were wildly popular in the ancient world, and his feat with the Nemean Lion was retold over and over again, in plays and artistic depictions like paintings on vases. As part of his labors, he was sent by King Eurystheus to bring him the skin of a lion that was terrorizing the town of Nemea. Upon discovering that weapons would not work on the beast, he tracked it to its lair and strangled it. An ancient superhero story!

Provenance: collection of a Munich, Germany doctor, acquired 1960s to the 1990s
