Description
**First Time At Auction**
North or South America, Nueva Cadiz, ca. 1600 to 1800 CE. A lovely strand of sixteen Nueva Cadiz blue glass beads named for a 16th century Spanish colony in Venezuela where archaeologists first identified this type of bead. Size: 17" L (43.2 cm); largest bead 1.5" L (3.8 cm)
Pre-Columbian, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE; Italy, Venice, ca. 19th century CE. Paired with this is a strand including two Pre-Columbian terracotta spindle whorls, a disk of black obsidian, a white shell, several greenstone beads, and dozens of emerald green and white Venetian glass beads. Quite a stunning ensemble of beads from several cultures. Size: 33" L (83.8 cm); spindle whorls 1.5" in diameter (3.8 cm)
Nueva Cadiz beads were most likely manufactured in Venice and later became part of the colonists' trade kit; hundreds of Nueva Cadiz beads have been excavated from the James Fort site. The stunning blue hues would have been very desirable to the Virginia Indians who admired this coloring as it resembled that of the skies above. According to the records of Historic Jamestowne, the first permanent English settlement in America, these beads are square when viewed in cross section and usually contain three layers of glass.
