Description
The exact title of this print is "Sudden Shower under the Mountain." It is also referred to as one of the two "Red Fujis," though that title is more often reserved for the next print in the series. Here the red near the peak fades below the cloud line into an ominous reddish black, broken by a crack of lightning. The lofty cone presides grandly over the commotion of a stormy summer shower that dances at its feet. Despite the mass of the mountain, the lightning conveys a feeling of turbulence, where "The Red Fuji" is serenity itself. Traditional Japanese painters almost invariably showed Fuji as an isosceles triangle with a hat-like three-pronged peak. In some respects "Fuji in a Storm" accords with this accepted form, but Hokusai lengthened the left side to form an irregular triangle and gave the peak a rugged broken line that approaches realism. His mountain has been formalized, but into a pattern closer to the actual shape of the peak than is the traditional view.
Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) was a Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period. He is best known as author of the woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, which includes the internationally iconic print, The Great Wave off Kanagawa, created during the 1820's.
