Description
A magnificent imperial incense holder. It is made of very fine, white clay, typical for Guangxu imperial porcelain body. The lipped mouth rim extends several millimeters inward, typical for some cylindrical imperial porcelain of that period. The outer wall is elaborately hand painted a ferocious dragon playing with a flaming pearl of wisdom among black floral scroll on a gold ground. The spirited dragon has two bulging eyes and a huge, wide open mouth, showing the fangs and impressive white teeth, with five claws wide open, seeming to try to catch something. The details of the head and scales are carefully painted. Such a great attention to the head and scale is typical for the work of Guangxu porcelain painters. The gold background has a purplish tint and reflects light like a mirror, indicating that the gold enamel is of “Sui gin” (water gold) type, which was popular during the 3rd and 4th quarter of 19th century. The imperial mark is written in intense red in two column of “kai shu” on the outer base, and is a very typical mark of Guangxu emperor. Three delicately and elaborately paint border bands are painted around the mouth rim and foot rim. Such delicate and artistic work makes this incense holder a worthwhile collecting item. (Dr. Robert I-San Lin Collection 2555, brought to California in 1960s). 5.25"X1.75"
