Description
Colored chalk on wove drawing paper, portrait of a man in profile, attributed* to Jean Cocteau (1889-1963). Signed and dated 1960, lower right corner. 11 3/4 x 8 1/4 inches. Hinge remnants from previous framing on reverse, otherwise very good condition. Removed from frame for inspection and shipping.
Provenance: Acquired by the former owner from his good friends, Charles Hathaway and his partner Hubert de Saint Senoch (1913-1983), Paris, sometime after 1965. Bequeathed thereafter to the current owner, circa 1995. Hubert de Saint Senoch was an important French collector (see, for example, Sotheby's sales 1983 and 1992) and presumably acquired the drawing directly from the artist, who was a mutual friend of both Saint Senoch and the former owner.
