Description
Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Floral Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1800, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and open loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of three hanging fan-shaped flowers. One side includes hollow, tear-drop-shaped incising to the petals of one flower. Additional incised and cobalt-highlighted hanging floral motifs under each handle. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A finely-decorated example of early Manhattan stoneware. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a fifty-year private collection. An in-the-firing chip to one handle. A 3 1/2" in-the-firing separation line from rim, extending under one handle. In-the-firing lines throughout surface, not visible on interior. Some exfoliation to interior. Two base chips, one of which is glazed over.
