William Fettes Douglas (Scottish, 1822-1891), "The Monk," oil on panel, panel: 12"h x 10"w, overall (with frame): 21"h x 19.25"w. Provenance: Private Collection, Newport Beach, California.
Note: Most of Douglas' works were given to the Royal Scottish Museum of Scotland. In 1877, Sir William became President of the institution until 1882. During that time, he painted, "The Monk", "Ruby Ring", "The Spell" and "The Alchemist". Museum collections: Harvard University Museum, National Gallery of Scotland, Tate Gallery (London), and the Victoria and Albert Museum (London)
