AMERICAN LINEN PLAIN-WEAVE HAND TOWEL / SHOW TOWEL, with cotton cross-stitch embroidery, rectangular, comprising three panels, left edge hemmed, right edge selvage; the small panel is folded back on itself connected by triangular bar insertion; design features name across the top "Mary Ritter" with triangles, potted flower tulip, heart cross with four hearts, below at the corners are oval star flowers and below that is a centered potted flowering tulip plant flanked by stylized tulip plants in tall handled urns, flanked in turn by cross-topped crowns, with staggered bar border at bottom. Likely Pennsylvania. First half 19th century. 35" x 16 3/4" OA.
Very good condition overall with one small area of loss to drawn work at bottom corner.
Provenance: From the Allentown Art Museum to benefit future acquisitions for the Museum's textile collection.
