Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1400 CE. A large tunic woven from native off-white cotton with camelid fibers with embroidered appliques resembling small, double-headed snake-like creatures in pink, gold, and brown hues; colorful bands with zoomorphic forms in pink and yellow on a gold ground on the sleeves, a long striated band on the lower border, as well as fringe at neckline and along bottom. One side also features vertical bands embroidered with birds and felines (probably jaguars) in chocolate brown and white yarns. Custom stand. The creatures depicted on this tunic provide layers of symbolic meaning. The bicephalic serpent for example was a signifier of high rank in various Pre-Columbian world views. These two-headed beasts were regarded as sky bands that arched over the earth or surrounded the seas serving as a passageway for the planets and stars of the celestial realm. This motif decorated objects associated with individuals of high rank, thus associating them with the powers of this mighty creature. Beyond this, even the singular serpent is a fascinating element of Pre-Columbian iconography as it was regarded to be a beneficial source of nourishment and at the same time quite deadly with its poisonous venom. Also important to the indigenous was the fact that snakes shed their skin annually thus rejuvenating themselves and serving as symbols of renewal and good health. The jaguar symbolized power and might throughout the Pre-Columbian world. Warriors, rulers, hunters, and shamans alike associated themselves with this king of beasts, the largest and most powerful feline in the New World. Finally, birds were highly symbolic and favorite iconography in Pre-Columbian art. As sky animals, they were associated with the celestial sun and moon and were believed to act as messengers between humankind and their deities.
