Northern Europe, Viking peoples, ca. 1000 BCE. This brooch is made of a thick bronze wire, with the ends pinched and pierced. These ends extend to a round ring, flattened with a hammer, and decorated with stamped concentric circle designs. A pin is attached to the flattened portion with a loop and moves freely around the length of the ring. Metal objects, especially those made of precious metal like bronze, were treasured in the Viking period; this particular piece, used for an elaborate woman's cape, may have been passed through a family.
