Description
Baroque Style Chess Set, Vienna, Austria, circa 1800
Carved Softwood (most likely spruce)
In this baroque style set, the Kings wear wigs and the Queens don rear gathered dresses. Tower figures as elephants with turrets on their backs are typical representations of the time. Carved notches on the base of the pieces are intended for better grip while playing, and create a visually whimsical movement effect.
King is 8.5 cm high, and pawn 7.4 cm high
Exibited/Literature:
Schachspiele Wandel Im Laufe Der Kunst Und Kulturgeschichte (Chess: Art History and Culture), Staatliches Museum fur Volkerkunde Munchen, 1988, plate 97, text page 83.
Staatliches Museum fur Volkerkunde (founded 1862) is now the Museum Funf Kontinente (Five Continents Museum, Munich, Germany)
Notes indicate the maker of the set is Pachmann.
Provenance: Jaeger Collection; Private Brussels Collection
Condition: A light brown farmer (pawn) was replaced by a new one (1970s). Replacement piece is carved in Belgium. Pawn was missing as far back as provenance is available for the set.
